A carotid patch is what the surgeon uses to repair a part of the carotid artery after opening it up. The carotid artery is the main blood vessel that supplies blood and oxygen to the brain. Clogging of the artery and possible blocks essentially obstruct the blood flow to the brain causing a stroke. To prevent this, the surgeon accesses the artery surgically and removes the blocks inside. After the procedure, the artery is repaired using a carotid patch.
