What is the best treatment for medulloblastoma in a child?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My eight-year-old son has been having severe headaches and vomiting for weeks. We finally got an MRI scan, and the results showed a brain tumor. The neurologist said it was a medulloblastoma, a common type of pediatric brain neoplasm.

I am absolutely devastated and scared out of my mind. We are being referred to an oncology team for treatment. I have been researching like crazy, but it is all so overwhelming.

Can you shed some light on what to expect with this type of pediatric brain cancer? I need to stay strong for my boy, but I am a wreck right now. Any insights would be appreciated.

Please help.

I appreciate that you have chosen icliniq.com for your medical needs.

I am here to give you the best care possible.

Medulloblastoma is a type of malignant brain tumor that primarily affects children. It can spread to other parts of the brain and spinal cord through cerebrospinal fluid. Common symptoms include:

  1. Severe headaches that worsen in the morning.
  2. Nausea and vomiting due to increased intracranial pressure.
  3. Balance and coordination problems.
  4. Irritability or changes in school performance.
  5. Double vision.

Diagnosis involves:

  1. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan.
  2. Lumbar puncture.
  3. Biopsy.
  4. Staging helps determine how far the cancer has spread and guides treatment planning.

Treatment options depend on physical examination and investigation by a neurosurgeon on a case-by-case basis:

  1. Surgery.
  2. Radiation therapy.
  3. Chemotherapy.
  4. Targeted therapy.

The prognosis for medulloblastoma varies depending on:

  1. Age at diagnosis.
  2. The extent of tumor removal.
  3. Spread of cancer.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
