What are the reasons for bloated stomach and swollen legs after gallbladder removal surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a bloated stomach post my gallbladder removal surgery and my legs are also swollen to a size twice the size of my legs before surgery. However, I have no fever or chills. It has been two days since I underwent the cholecystitis operation. It hurts to stand straight and the back on my right hurts. I am currently taking the tablets Paracetamol and Endone. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Be assured that all your healthcare concerns are in safe hands. I am here to guide you through your query.

Thank you for the description of your symptoms. Sometimes, post-surgery your gut motility gets slowed down which in medical terms is called post-operative ileus. The best way to manage this is to move around in the room, take fluids and a pro-kinetic. The swelling in your legs can happen after surgery especially if you are resting on the bed (results in dependent edema). For this, you can elevate your legs by placing some pillows underneath your legs while lying on the bed. But it is important to note that there should be no redness or tenderness in your legs because it could indicate an inflammation or venous occlusion.

I hope I have answered your queries. Do get back if you have any further queries.

It was truly a pleasure to have you at icliniq.

Thank you.
