What is the risk of cholera outbreaks spreading to other regions?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Did you catch the news about the cholera outbreak? It seems to be quite severe, with hundreds of suspected cases already. From what I have read, cholera is spread through contaminated water and food, leading to severe diarrhea, vomiting, and deadly dehydration if not treated. Sounds brutal! My main question is, how much of a threat do outbreaks like this pose to places outside the immediate area?

With modern travel, is there any real risk of the disease spreading to other regions or even overseas? Or do health authorities usually have good protocols to contain cholera these days? Just seems like a scary situation that could potentially get out of hand if not handled properly. let me know if my worries are justified or if I am overreacting.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Imported cases have arrived mostly from the neighboring region, which has been battling a cholera epidemic since the start of the year.

On starting of this month, additional medical personnel were deployed to join the existing team to tackle the outbreak. A field coordinator and one of those reservists, said: "We are also distributing antibiotics and vaccinating as many as possible, as the population is very receptive."

Last week, 58 cases of cholera had been identified on the island, and thanks to an ongoing vaccination campaign more than 2,600 people have been vaccinated, according to the Regional health agency.

Cholera is an intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae. Definitive diagnosis is not a prerequisite for the treatment of patients with cholera. The priority in managing watery diarrhea is replacing the lost fluid and electrolytes and providing an antimicrobial agent when indicated.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
