How does the C1q21.1 gain affect my baby’s health?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby (9-month-old boy) has a 0.384 Mb gain at C1q21.1.

He has had cardiac and kidney problems since birth, including hypoplastic aortic arch, coarctation of the aorta, an undersized but functional left ventricle, and issues with the aortic and mitral valves. He also has bilateral duplex kidneys, reflux, and one kidney that has a lobe that does not appear normal in anatomy or function.

Can you tell me what to expect from this chromosomal abnormality that has been identified?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

In many cases, children with 1q21.1 duplications(a chromosomal change in which a small amount of genetic material on chromosome 1 is abnormally copied (duplicated)) go on to develop their own unique strengths and may benefit from targeted therapies or support, if needed. The presentation can vary widely from child to child, even with similar genetic findings, so ongoing observation is important.

Early intervention, such as physical, occupational, or speech therapy, can be helpful for children who show developmental delays, as it supports skills during key stages of growth. Working with a developmental pediatrician can be valuable for tracking and supporting his growth and developmental milestones over time.

It may also be helpful to maintain regular follow-ups with specialists already involved in his care, especially given his cardiac and kidney concerns, to ensure coordinated management. Monitoring developmental progress, behavior, and learning patterns as he grows can provide useful insights into any additional support he may need.

Finally, connecting with a genetics counselor or joining support groups for families dealing with 1q21.1 duplication can provide additional guidance and support based on the latest research and shared experiences from other families. These resources can also help in understanding variability in outcomes and navigating care decisions as he grows.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
