Can LED lighting help reduce migraine attacks at work?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have chronic migraines, and fluorescent lights at work trigger them. Some days, I get home and just fall into bed due to fatigue. HR has informed me that they need a doctor’s note to make any adjustments to my station.
As a person with migraines aged 48 years, should I ask for LED lights as an adjustment at work? This is not usually recommended by doctors.
Please help me out.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Chronic migraines affect people a lot. If the fluorescent lights in your place of work tend to trigger your migraine attacks, then you can talk about possible modifications that can be made.
The doctors will give a supporting letter if there is any need to, as it is quite well known that triggering factors should be managed properly.
Instead of asking for specific lighting, your doctor can recommend various modifications like replacing fluorescent lights with LED lights, which do not flicker, using a desk lamp that has a switch to change the brightness level, changing your position in order to get more natural light, or using tinted glasses for migraines if necessary.
The doctor’s note should contain information about the fact that bright or flashing fluorescent lights cause the problem, and changing them might decrease the frequency of the occurrence of migraines.
I hope this helps.
Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.
Thank you.
