The cisterna magna is a cerebrospinal fluid-filled opening between the meninges surrounding the brain, between the cerebellum and the medulla oblongata portions of the brain. These can sometimes be enlarged (a normal variant). However, the cisterna magna is also enlarged if there is a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia, which is often seen in genetic anomalies such as trisomies.
