How do I manage painful pores and swelling around my vagina?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

There are a lot of pores and swelling around my vagina. What could these symptoms mean? I do not understand what is happening at times, as it causes a lot of pain and significant swelling in my vaginal area.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The symptoms you describe, such as swelling, visible pores or bumps, and continuous pain in the vaginal area lasting for two to three weeks, suggest that there may be an infection or inflammation of the skin or glands around the vagina.

Common causes include folliculitis, which occurs when hair follicles become infected due to shaving, sweating, or friction; a Bartholin gland cyst or abscess, which develops when a gland near the vaginal opening becomes blocked and swollen; or a bacterial infection such as cellulitis or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like herpes or chlamydia, which can also cause painful swelling or sores.

The “pores” you notice could be inflamed hair follicles or blocked glands filled with pus or fluid. Since this has been going on for several weeks without improvement and is painful, you should see a gynecologist as soon as possible. They can examine the area and may perform a swab or urine test to determine the cause.

Avoid squeezing or scratching the bumps, as this can worsen the infection. Keep the area clean and dry, wear loose cotton underwear, and avoid using scented soaps or creams until you are evaluated. If it is an infection, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics, antifungal medication, or warm compresses to relieve pain and swelling. Early medical attention is important to prevent the infection from spreading and to ensure proper healing.

I hope this has helped you.

Please feel free to reach out to me again for further queries.

Thank you.
