How to differentiate between common cold and pneumonia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been wondering if staying out all night could give my baby pneumonia. She recently had a clear, runny nose and occasional sneezing. It does not seem severe, but I am starting to worry it could turn into something worse. I am not sure if she has a fever, she does not feel very warm, but I have not checked her temperature properly yet. We were out pretty late the other night, and I can not help but think it might have made her symptoms worse. Should I be concerned about pneumonia, or is this just a common cold?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your child's symptoms do not seem to indicate pneumonia. It is important to monitor for persistent fever, increased respiratory rate, and nasal flaring. If these symptoms occur, an urgent referral to a pediatrician is necessary. Pneumonia must be taken seriously, especially in children.

Key danger signs to watch for include a persistent fever that does not respond to treatment and new-onset shortness of breath. Pneumonia is common in children and the elderly, as they are often more immunocompromised compared to adults. If pneumonia is suspected, consulting a pediatrician is recommended immediately.

For prevention, ensure your child receives regular vaccinations, such as the pneumococcal vaccine (Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine, PPV) and the influenza vaccine. Follow-up appointments with the pediatrician are essential. Additionally, maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle and a balanced, nutritious diet will support overall health.

Follow up after three days.

I hope that you got your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Take care.
