How can I effectively manage my constipation and bloating?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been super constipated again. It has been almost a week, and I have tried everything: fiber cereal, prunes, extra water, and even stool softeners. My stomach feels bloated and heavy, and I keep getting cramps that make it hard to focus at work. I have been eating more veggies and walking after meals, but it does not seem to help much.

I think stress might be part of it, too. I have been traveling for work and eating irregularly. saw a few over-the-counter options online, like osmotic laxatives, but I wanted to check with you first. I just want some relief without getting dependent on something. This seems like such a small thing, but it really affects my energy and mood. Please tell me,

  1. Could my thyroid or iron supplements be making it worse?

  2. How can I handle my constipation?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Constipation is very common and very uncomfortable. However, going almost a week without a proper bowel movement can cause you bloating, cramps, and heaviness. Factors like travel, irregular meals, stress, and a change in routine can trigger your symptoms.

Yes, iron supplements are a very common cause of constipation. They harden your stool and slow bowel movement. If you are taking iron, that could definitely worsen things. The thyroid can also play a role in constipation. Hypothyroidism is a known cause of constipation, so if thyroid hasn’t been checked recently, it’s reasonable to test.

In your case, fiber helps with constipation. But too much fiber without enough fluid or with slow bowel movement can sometimes worsen bloating. Increase slowly and combine with good hydration.

At this stage, an osmotic laxative like polyethylene glycol (PEG) is very reasonable. It works by pulling water into the stool and is not habit-forming. It is safe for longer use compared to stimulant laxatives. Other things you can do are,

  • Continue walking daily.

  • Fixed toilet timing after breakfast.

  • Warm fluid in the morning.

  • Manage stress and sleep.

Avoid frequent stimulant laxatives (like senna or bisacodyl) unless short-term.

Also, you should seek medical help in case of the following complications,

Constipation may feel small, but it affects mood, focus, and energy. With the right adjustment (especially reviewing iron and possibly thyroid), it usually improves well.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
