Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I had significant parts of the transverse and descending colon removed about 26 years ago. Sporadically and now more regularly, I am experiencing constipation. Is this a common phenomenon, and is there a solution? I eat a plant-strong diet with fruits, vegetables, and whole grains making up the majority of my intake, and typically drink 60 to 80 oz of water daily.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com
Yes, constipation post partial colectomy is possible even after years of surgery. Post-surgery colon undergoes disruption in rhythmic movements, which can cause constipation. It can be due to dysmotility or segmental transit delay. High fibre diets are not helpful every time. Radio-opaque studies might help to understand whether it is a motility issue or a transit delay.
You must undergo a CT (computed tomography) scan or colonoscopy to check for slow movements, stricture, and pelvic floor abnormalities. You can use osmotic laxatives, prokinetics like Metoclopramide, and physical therapy.
I hope this information helps you.
Thank you.
