Is there any specific medication to treat constipation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35-year-old male. I have been working in the private sector past seven years and my life is a little stressful. I do not have any major illness and not taking any medicines either. However, the past two days, it is been really hard, two days back I had to strain a lot to pass my loo. But now, it is not happening at all, even after straining. Feels like it might tear if I give more pressure. What would be causing this? Will I have to face any complications for not passing my feces for the last two days, I am totally worried. I want to know the reason for this. Also, how can I get relief? How to treat this immediately? Is there any specific medicine to treat constipation? I have never faced such problems before, Please help.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The cause of constipation could be related to dietary habits (low fiber intake), dehydration, lack of physical activity, or stress. Stress can slow down digestion and contribute to constipation as well. Straining can cause discomfort and may even lead to hemorrhoids (piles) or anal fissures (small tears in the lining of the anus).

You can get immediate relief-

  1. Increase your water intake.

  2. Consuming foods rich in fiber.

  3. Exercise, such as walking, can stimulate the digestive system and help ease constipation.

  4. Over-the-counter stool softeners unless otherwise contraindicated.

  5. Sitting in a warm bath can help relax the muscles around the anus, which may ease the passage of stools.

A visit to your doctor is highly recommended. Try not to strain too much, as excessive pressure can worsen the problem. A physical examination by a doctor in a hospital is a must.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
