How effective is the Unwanted 72 pill after unprotected sex?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Last month, my period came in the last week of the previous month; after that, I took an unwanted 72 pill. Ten days later, by mistake, I had sex without protection, or now I have my period five days earlier than usual this month, and its color is also black. Now I am very scared. I thought whatever was going on was not because of pregnancy. Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Taking an emergency contraceptive pill can cause temporary changes to your menstrual cycle. It is common to experience early, delayed, or irregular periods after taking the pill, as it affects hormone levels to prevent pregnancy. Here is what could be happening:
-
Early period: The pill may have caused your period to come earlier than expected this month, which is common after taking emergency contraception.
-
Dark or black blood: Black or dark brown blood is typically old blood that has been sitting in the uterus and is now being expelled. This can happen when the flow is lighter or at the beginning or end of a period.
-
Pregnancy concerns: While emergency contraception is highly effective, it is not 100 percent surety.
If you are concerned about pregnancy, consider taking a pregnancy test at least three weeks from the date of unprotected sex to confirm whether or not you are pregnant.
Other possible effects of emergency contraception:
-
Spotting or irregular bleeding in between periods.
-
Heavier or lighter periods than usual for the next cycle or two.
-
Menstrual cramps or other PMS (premenstrual syndrome) )-like symptoms.
If the irregularities persist beyond a couple of cycles, or if you are experiencing other unusual symptoms, it would be a good idea to consult me to rule out any complications. However, the changes you are noticing now are likely due to the emergency contraceptive pill rather than pregnancy.
I hope this helps.
