Do combination birth control pills cause milk discharge?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35-year-old female, and my breasts have a small amount of milk production, but it is very little. I am taking Althea pills, and my last pill was a few days ago. I have a seven-day break before my menstruation, which is scheduled to occur on the fourth day of the break. I am concerned about the lactation in my breasts, and I am wondering why this is happening. I had unprotected sexual intercourse a week ago, just before my last pill. I am panicking, but I took a pregnancy test, and it was negative.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am very sorry about your medical condition and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms, I strongly believe you have developed galactorrhea, which is a discharge of breast milk following a high level of serum prolactin. It has nothing to do with pregnancy since you have ruled out pregnancy from the negative test. Please do a serum prolactin test and reply to me with the result, please take the following:

One tablet Bromocriptine 2.5 mg (milligrams) orally everyday for one month. Reply to me if you have more concerns or questions by scheduling a direct appointment or follow up via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
