Can stem cells from cord blood help with cerebral palsy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 33 weeks pregnant and already have a son who was born with a mild form of cerebral palsy. We are expecting another boy and are currently looking into cord blood banking. I have read that stem cell therapies are being studied for neurological conditions like cerebral palsy. We are feeling overwhelmed trying to separate genuine hope from hype.

  1. Is there any chance that banked cord blood could be useful if the new baby shows developmental issues as well?
  2. And if not, could it ever help his older brother?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concerns. The use of banked cord blood has shown some promising results in improving motor skills in children with mild cerebral palsy. However, most of these studies are still at the experimental or clinical trial level and have not yet been standardized.

Additionally, banked cord blood is primarily intended for use by the same individual (autologous use) if the need arises. For it to be used for your first child, compatibility testing (allogeneic matching) would be necessary. However, these treatments are still in the trial or experimental phase and have not yet become routine clinical practice.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
