What should be done if a kid swallows a facial cream?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am currently using a Cosmelan 2 facial cream as per the advice of my dermatologist. I applied the cream today, and it dried after six hours. Before I could wash my face, my 3-year-old son touched my face and then immediately put the same hand in his mouth. I am worried that if any of the facial cream got into his mouth, it could cause harm to my son.

Please help clarify.

Hi,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I can understand your concern.

Facial cream contains active ingredients such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, azelaic acid, and other depigmenting agents. While these ingredients are primarily for topical use and can be irritating if ingested, the small amount that your son may have gotten from touching your face and then putting his hand in his mouth is unlikely to cause significant harm.

  1. Rinse his mouth: Give him some water to drink and rinse out his mouth to help remove any potential residue.
  2. Observe for any symptoms: Watch for any signs of irritation or distress, such as excessive drooling, vomiting, or difficulty breathing. These are unlikely but important to monitor.

If you notice any unusual symptoms or if you are still concerned, it would be best to contact your pediatrician or seek medical advice promptly.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
