Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am reaching out regarding the NT scan ultrasound, which showed 6 mm at 14 weeks of pregnancy. The OB doctor mentioned that it is a cystic hygroma and referred for FISH CVS for abnormalities. The FISH test came as normal, and it says, “No numerical abnormality for chromosomes X, 13, 18, and 21.” Normal result with cystic hygroma high and with CVS (FISH test) normal.
Could you let me know if a cystic hygroma being 6 mm at 13 weeks six days, can we expect a healthy baby without any other issues? . I'm not sure how it goes. The OB doctor mentioned that I'm not sure as cystic hygroma at 13 weeks was 10 mm and then 6 mm later.
Our genetic counselor said, even if CVS comes out normal, there could be other abnormalities or a heart defect, or it may not be. By doing some online searches as well, the chances seem less.
It could still be a stillbirth or heart issues in the future, as cystic hygroma is high. Considering all this, what would be your suggestion? Can I continue my pregnancy or terminate with the info we have? May I also know the probability of having a healthy baby with this condition?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I am very sorry about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to changes in your body system. But do not worry. I am here to take care of you. Regarding your questions, yes, there is a good chance that the baby may be stillborn or come up with associated health problems like heart disease or any congenital structural defects.
Despite the FISH CVS (fluorescence in situ hybridization test performed on a chorionic villus sampling) result being normal, the cystic hygroma may be associated with a familial trait possibly inherited from a third-generation family member. I suggest you have an abortion, as the baby may have a neurological disorder when delivered.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
