Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I need treatment for dandruff and a psoriasis-like condition of the scalp, which has been present for the past two to three months. I had a hair transplant four years ago. I am currently taking antidepressants.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
I understand how uncomfortable and frustrating it can be to deal with persistent dandruff and psoriasis-like scaling on the scalp, especially when it has been ongoing for a few months.
Based on your history, pictures, and symptoms (attachments were removed to protect the patient's identity), you appear to have seborrheic dermatitis (a non-contagious skin condition), which is a prevalent and manageable scalp condition. It is not contagious and is often triggered or worsened by stress, hormonal factors, certain medications such as antidepressants, and changes in the scalp environment.
Your previous hair transplant is unlikely to be the direct cause, although the scalp can remain more sensitive afterward. This condition is very manageable, so please do not worry.
I am outlining a step-by-step treatment plan to help you effectively manage your symptoms.
Apply Betagalen (Betamethasone) to the scalp every night and leave it on overnight. Wash it off the next day. You may also wash on alternate days. It has no harmful side effects on the scalp and helps control scaling and inflammation caused by Malassezia fungus.
Take one 10 mg tablet of Cetirizine at bedtime if you have itching, for seven to 10 days.
Switch to an antifungal shampoo, which contains Ketoconazole. Apply it to the scalp during hair wash, leave it on for one to two minutes, then rinse. Use it twice a week, and on other days, use your regular shampoo.
Avoid scratching, harsh hair products, frequent oiling, and very hot water, as these can worsen the condition. Continue this regimen for 10 to 14 days to see improvement. You may always follow up if needed.
Kindly consult your doctor and take medicines accordingly.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Thank you.
