Can period-postpone tablets cause a delay in the period?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had protected sex a few days ago, and I took tablets to postpone my periods for four days due to some other reasons, and now I have not gotten my periods. What should I do now? Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since you took period-postpone tablets (which usually contain progesterone) for four days, your period may be delayed due to hormonal changes. These tablets work by keeping progesterone levels high, preventing the uterine lining from shedding. Once you stop taking them, your period usually arrives within three to seven days, but it can sometimes take up to two weeks. I suggest you do the following:

  1. Wait a few more days. Since you stopped the tablets, you might get your periods seven to eight days later.

  2. Since you had protected sex, pregnancy is very unlikely, but if you are worried, take a home pregnancy test to rule it out.

  3. Stress and hormonal changes can delay your period further.

  4. If your period does not come within two weeks of stopping the tablets, consult a doctor for further evaluation.

I want to know if you have had any spotting, cramps, or other symptoms since stopping the tablets. Please let me know so I can plan your treatment accordingly.

    I hope this helps you.

    Thank you.
