What could cause a late period after taking a post-sex pill?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex, and he ejaculated inside me. I wiped it off and took the morning-after pill within five hours. It was my last ovulating day. It has been a week now, and I have not experienced any withdrawal bleeding. I have also noticed some breast tenderness and nausea. Could I be pregnant? Kindly guide.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Your menstrual irregularities could be attributed to a hormonal imbalance triggered by the emergency contraceptive pill (I-pill). Since you took the emergency contraceptive pill promptly, the likelihood of pregnancy in your case is minimal.

Abdominal pain and white discharge may stem from the side effects of the pill, so there is no need for alarm. Some individuals may experience withdrawal bleeding due to the sudden cessation of hormones from their body. Your next period may be somewhat unpredictable due to the hormonal fluctuations caused by the emergency contraceptive pill. It could arrive earlier than expected or be delayed by about a week.

I suggest waiting and observing for the onset of your menses. Perform a home urine pregnancy test seven days after your missed period date to rule out pregnancy.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
