After taking Plan B, my periods are late. Why?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex on the day my period ended. We used the withdrawal method, and I took Plan B right afterward. I am female, 5 feet 5 inches tall, and weigh 182 lbs. I also have PCOS and an anxiety disorder, so my periods are fairly irregular.

My period did not start the next month, so I took an at-home pregnancy test the following day, and it was negative. I also got a blood test done, and both results were negative.

Is this 100 percent reliable, even though I still have not had any bleeding yet?

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your history and understand your worries.

In your case, the menstrual irregularities could be due to the hormonal imbalance caused by the i-Pill (Levonorgestrel). Since you took the i-Pill on time, the chances of pregnancy are extremely low.

The abdominal pain and white discharge you are experiencing may be side effects of the i-Pill, so there is usually no need to worry. Some women may also experience withdrawal bleeding due to the sudden hormonal changes caused by the pill.

Your next period may be slightly unpredictable because of this hormonal imbalance. It may come earlier than expected or be delayed by about a week or so. For now, wait and monitor your menstrual cycle. If your period is delayed, you can take a home urine pregnancy test seven days after your missed period date to further rule out pregnancy.

Make sure to stay hydrated, maintain a healthy diet, and avoid unnecessary stress, as these factors can also affect your cycle. However, if you develop severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fever, foul-smelling discharge, or if your periods remain absent for a prolonged time, kindly consult a gynecologist for further evaluation.

I hope you found this information helpful. Please feel free to ask if you need any more clarification or support.

Thank you.
