Can excessive workout leads to delayed periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been 24 days late, and I have not gotten my period. I had my period last month and had protected, plus pull-out sex on the 20th. I did not get my period during this month, I did a PT and already got two negatives, so I am not pregnant.

Last week, there were very tiny strings of blood in my brown discharge, it was only very little tho and only came when I wiped. It stopped and came back again with white creamy discharge for like one day. That stopped, and now I am still not sure why I do not have my period. I was regular for the past few months with an average cycle of 32 days. This happened last year when I had a 50 and 60-day cycle, I did notice I was doing a lot of physical activity at that time and was extremely exhausted (but the discharge stuff did not happen).

I started working out more during the last months, could this be a reason why? Someone, answer please, because I am worried.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Yes, increased physical activity, stress, or changes in routine can delay your period, especially if it has happened before. Since pregnancy tests are negative and you have had light spotting, it is likely a hormonal delay. If your period does not return in another one to two weeks, consider seeing a doctor for a check-up.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
