Can stress or a poor diet cause a delay in my periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My period was supposed to start 25 days ago, but it did not, and it has been over two weeks now. I am 28 years old, and this has never happened before. I had all the symptoms but no period. I had a very stressful week leading up to my expected period start date; my diet was very poor, and I had very little water. Could that have contributed?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

A delay of more than two weeks in a previously regular cycle needs proper consideration. Yes, stress, poor diet, and dehydration can definitely delay your period. These factors affect the hormones from the brain that control ovulation, so the cycle can shift or even skip once. This is quite common.

However, we should not assume stress alone. The most important first step is to rule out pregnancy, even if the risk seems low. A urine pregnancy test done now will be reliable.

Other possible reasons include delayed ovulation in that cycle, temporary hormonal imbalance, thyroid changes, or early signs of conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome. Since this has never happened before, it may just be a one-time disturbance.

I would suggest you follow these steps:

  • Do a pregnancy test as soon as possible.

  • If negative, wait another week and see if the period starts naturally.

  • Maintain good hydration, a balanced diet, and reduce stress.

Consult a doctor in person in the following situation:

  • If the pregnancy test is positive.

  • If your period does not come after a total delay of three to four weeks.

  • If you develop severe pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, or unusual symptoms.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
