Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I had unprotected sex one month ago now my period is delayed. I have conducted two pregnancy tests, one after 14 days and one after one month, but they both were negative, so I am confused about what I should do. Should I take any contraceptive pill? How can I know if I am pregnant or not?
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com
You had unprotected sex a month ago and have taken two pregnancy tests, one at 14 days and another at one month post-intercourse, both of which were negative. In such a case, it is highly unlikely that you are pregnant. Pregnancy tests are most accurate 14 or more days after sex or from the day of a missed period.
A negative result at one month is considered very reliable, as false negatives are rare unless the test has expired, been performed incorrectly, or there is an unusual condition causing extremely low hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels.
Since emergency contraceptive pills are only effective if taken within three to five days after unprotected sex, it is too late to take one now. However, if you are looking for ongoing protection, you can start a regular contraceptive method like the pill, patch, or IUD (intrauterine device) at any time. As for your delayed period, causes may include stress, illness, hormonal imbalances, or conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
If your period has not started in a few days, repeat the test using the first-morning urine. If it is still negative, consult a doctor for a blood test and evaluation for other possible reasons. Would you like help choosing a safe contraceptive method for the future?
I hope this information helps you.
Thank you.
