What is the role of gut microbiota in digestion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am over 50 and looking for ways to improve my digestion. I have heard that probiotics might help, but I am not sure how they work. What is the role of gut microbiota in digestion as we age? Someone mentioned prebiotics too, but I do not get what they are. Can you explain in simple terms how I can make my digestion better at this age?

Please guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Probiotics are a form of natural gut bacteria that produce some enzymes that help in digestion, make good health of the gut, and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Please share your daily routine and diet plan with me. Then I will suggest the best way to make strong digestion and a proper diet plan.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
