What are effective ways to get rid of yellow teeth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a problem with yellow teeth. Bleaching is expensive. So, how can I clean my teeth? What is the correct way to brush my teeth?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

There are two types of yellow staining,

  1. Extrinsic stains- Yellow deposits called calculus or tartar form on the outer surface of the tooth. These deposits can be easily removed by scaling and polishing (tooth cleaning procedure) as the yellow color of the tooth is from the calculus.
  2. Intrinsic stains- Certain tooth conditions like fluorosis affect the enamel layer of the tooth, changing its color to yellow or brown. These stains cannot be removed by scaling because the color is from the tooth enamel. This can be treated by tooth bleaching procedure or by giving a crown with the desired color covering the original color of the tooth. If you find the bleaching option to be expensive, you can choose to go with the crown type.

In both extrinsic and intrinsic situations, opting for a better toothpaste will not be a solution.

Please visit your nearest dentist and get to know what type of yellow staining your teeth have.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
