What causes dry eyes and photosensitivity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old woman. I have been experiencing dry eyes and photosensitivity, as diagnosed by a local ophthalmologist. My eyes become red and burn when exposed to sunlight, warm places, cold breezes, or wind. The most irritating issue is that the white part of my eyes has turned yellow, and there is also a small amount of skin around the pupil.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am very sorry to hear about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to the changes in your body. Please do not worry, as I am here to assist you. Based on your symptoms, I believe you may have developed acute porphyria, a hemoglobin-related disorder that involves the breakdown of hemoglobin in the blood and the release of bilirubin, which may deposit in your eyes. I recommend that you undergo a complete blood count (CBC) test and a liver function test to evaluate your condition further. Additionally, may I ask if you consume a significant amount of alcohol or take any medications, as these factors can affect your system when exposed to sunlight?

Revert with the answer to assist further.

Take care.
