What is the treatment for painful menstruation?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a 16-year-old female. I have been experiencing strong menstrual pains for the past three years. I have pain along my back and legs, as well as painful bloating and migraines. I have been put on birth control, but it does not feel like it is getting better, and it still hurts the same. I have taken painkillers, and my last prescription was for Ibuprofen 600 mg. An ultrasound was done, but there was no sign of anything wrong.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understood your concern.
Based on the information you provided, this is likely perimenstrual syndrome, which the patient may experience as severe lower abdominal and back pain starting two days before the period, along with nausea, vomiting, breast tenderness, mood swings, and irritability.
If you have started oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), could you tell me the name of the OCP you are taking? To assess the effect of the OCP, you may need to take it for up to three months. I would advise you to continue taking these OCPs for three months, and I hope this will help you if you take them continuously for that period.
I suggest you take the below-mentioned medications for relief:
-
Tablet Yaz (Ethinylestradiol 0.02 mg plus Drospirenone 3 mg) - Start on the second day of your period, taking it once a day for 21 days, followed by a seven-day pill-free interval. After the seven-day pill-free interval, start the next pack and take it for 21 days, then repeat the seven-day pill-free interval. Repeat this cycle for three months.
-
Tablet Mefenamic acid 500 mg - Take twice a day for the first five days of the menstrual cycle.
I hope this medication will help you.
Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.
Thank you.
