What causes sharp, piercing pains during sexual intercourse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have noticed that I do not really enjoy sex. While I do feel the urge and become aroused, I experience sharp, piercing pains during penetration and sexual intercourse. I do not understand the purpose of sex.

Hi,

We welcome you to icliniq family.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation.

I understand your concern.

It can be due to:

  1. Dryness resulting from infection, improper foreplay, dehydration, age factors, and hormonal imbalance. You can try a natural approach by increasing foreplay to promote lubrication, or you can use lubricants.
  2. Injury caused by dryness, deep penetration in certain sexual positions.
  3. Local infection. Please share a picture for confirmation.
  4. Vaginismus: Fear during sex can cause the genital muscles to contract, resulting in pain for both partners. Increasing the duration of foreplay can reduce fear and increase comfort.
  5. Congenital abnormality.
  6. History of surgery in the genital region.
  7. Injury to the cervix during intercourse.
  8. Fibroids: An abdominal ultrasound is needed to confirm the diagnosis.
  9. Recent childbirth.
  10. Kindly provide more details regarding the issue mentioned above so that we can work on diagnosis and management.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

    Thank you.
