How to manage anxiety related dysphagia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old man, 1.71 meters tall, and weighs 69 kilograms. For the past three years, I have occasionally experienced something strange related to swallowing. It tends to occur during anxious situations, such as when I am on a plane, watching a horror movie, or in a hospital. Whenever I feel stressed or anxious, I suddenly find it very difficult to swallow and develop an irrational fear of swallowing my tongue. This sensation usually lasts for about 10 to 20 minutes before it passes and I return to normal. Do you have any idea what this could be, and whether it’s something I should get checked out?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

What you are describing sounds like a form of anxiety-related dysphagia, where stress or panic causes a temporary difficulty in swallowing. The fear of swallowing your tongue is a common anxiety-driven sensation, even though it is not physically possible. Since it only happens during anxious situations and resolves on its own, it is likely related to panic attacks or somatic anxiety symptoms. It is still a good idea to consult me to rule out other causes and explore ways to manage your anxiety. Therapy or relaxation techniques can help reduce these episodes.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
