Can my life return to normal after a tonic-clonic seizure?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 36 years old and recently experienced a tonic-clonic seizure. As a result, I am no longer allowed to drive or swim alone, which has filled my life with constant fear. It is like everything changed overnight after I received an epilepsy diagnosis from all the tests that followed.
Will my life ever feel normal again after experiencing a tonic-clonic seizure at this age? I am now taking medication, but honestly, the anxiety feels more overwhelming than the seizure itself.
Please guide.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Anxiety after the diagnosis of a chronic illness is quite understandable and a normal human reaction. It is very challenging initially to accept the diagnosis, but ultimately, the human mind accepts the challenge and learns to deal with it.
A person with epilepsy can live a normal life with appropriate precautions. The ultimate goal is to prevent breakthrough seizures and maintain a seizure-free life. With regular drug therapy, follow-ups, and a balanced lifestyle, one can easily achieve a seizure-free life.
It is very important to know the triggers of a breakthrough episode, such as sleep deprivation, bright light, substance use, poor adherence to medications, chaotic lifestyle, etc.
To reduce anxiety, you can opt for yoga, mindfulness, self-support groups, deep breathing exercises, and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) sessions. For severe anxiety, drug therapy can be sought.
I hope my answer is satisfactory to you.
If you have any more questions, you can ask me in iCliniq.
Thanks.
