Can fever cause a baby's soft spot on the head to swell?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is two months old and has a higher-than-normal temperature. He has been fussy all day, and his soft spot seems to be swollen. He ate fine until our last feeding, after which he threw up immediately. What to do?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Though a temperature of 99.5 is not significant, it is associated with a swollen soft spot on the head, along with vomiting and fussiness, which need urgent attention. It needs to rule out any infection in the brain.

I suggest you take your son to the hospital immediately and get him checked up properly. It may be something simple like a viral infection, but you need to take care of something else. Do not worry.

Take care.

Thanks and regards.
