Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a woman, and I am worried about my family’s health. There are too many fruit flies and other flies at my place, which I am unable to eradicate.
Does eating food items contaminated by those flies cause any infection?
My small kid is getting frequent stomach aches; can this be due to the flies?
Is there any way to prevent contamination, and is there also any chance to decontaminate those foods?
Are those flies dangerous?
Please suggest precautionary measures.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Flies, including fruit flies and other types, can indeed be a nuisance and pose some health risks, especially if they contaminate food.
Flies can carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites because they often come into contact with garbage, feces, and other decaying matter. When they land on food, they can transfer these pathogens, potentially causing foodborne illnesses. Common symptoms of such infections include stomach aches, diarrhea, and vomiting, which might explain your child's frequent stomach aches.
For prevention and contamination.
Keep your kitchen and dining areas clean. Wipe surfaces regularly and avoid leaving food out in the open.
Store food in airtight containers. Refrigerate perishables promptly, and cover food items properly.
Ensure garbage bins are sealed tightly. Empty them regularly and clean them often.
Clean drains and sinks frequently, as these can be breeding grounds for flies.
To get rid of flies,
Check for and remove any overripe or decaying fruits and vegetables. Ensure there are no standing water sources where flies can breed.
You can make homemade traps using apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a small bowl. The flies will be attracted to the vinegar and get trapped in the liquid.
You can use sticky tape that is placed around the house to catch flies.
Use natural repellents like essential oils (for example., lavender, eucalyptus) or commercial fly sprays, ensuring they are safe for use around food and children.
Deeply clean your kitchen and dining areas regularly.
If the infestation is severe and home remedies are not working, consider contacting a professional pest control service.
For Decontaminating Food,
Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.
Cooking food at appropriate temperatures can kill most pathogens.
Inspect food items for any signs of fly contamination (for example., eggs, larvae) and discard any contaminated items.
While not all flies pose a severe health risk, their potential to spread pathogens means it is crucial to address infestations promptly. By following the prevention and control measures outlined above, you can significantly reduce the risk and maintain a healthier home environment.
Check with a physician for your kid, and plan for deworming.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
Regards.
