Can taking GABA supplements cause side effects?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I took a 750 mg GABA supplement a fortnight ago and have developed horrible symptoms. I have developed stomach issues and feel very weak when I wake up and fall asleep all day. Vision issues, balance issues, digestive issues, pain, and tingling in feet have also occurred. I am pretty sure that the symptoms developed after taking GABA supplements. Should not the symptoms have worn off by now? How do I cure this? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.

Gabaergic drugs certainly can induce some similar adverse effects. Nevertheless, it is odd that an adverse drug-induced impact sustains longer after drug cessation. Because GABA half-life is five to seven hours; therefore, it is eliminated from the body after about 25 to 30 hours, provided that the person's kidney function is normal. As I saw on your attached lab results (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). So, the constellation of your symptoms is not attributable to the GABA supplement. Please provide information on why you used a GABA supplement. Also, the only abnormality in your lab result is your free calcium level.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

What does calcium irregularity mean? Is it serious? Also, I took GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) supplements to try and help my nervous system, but that was a mistake. I did not have these symptoms until after I took the GABA supplement. Is it possible the dose was too high, damaging my CNS (central nervous system) neurotransmitter signaling? I am also having issues with my bladder and frequent urination. I took the GABA supplements out of desperation to fix my hyperacusis. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

What was the brand of your GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) supplement? Your calcium level is not too low but mildly lower than normal. However, hypocalcemia can induce weakness, digestive problems, and a tingling sensation in the distal part of the limbs and around the mouth area.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Were there any indications of liver issues? Do liver issues cause fatigue and daytime sleepiness? I feel so weak when I try to wake up in the morning. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

Your laboratory test does not include liver function tests. So I cannot judge its function. A complete check-up with not only liver function tests but also thyroid function tests are needed. The latter is essential because low thyroid function may cause sleepiness, fatigue, and a broad spectrum of symptoms. Meanwhile, your calcium level should be rechecked, and if it turns out to be low, you need to visit a nephrologist to find the cause. Moreover, a neurological clinical examination is necessary to evaluate your symptoms completely. For this aim, you need to be visited by a neurologist.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
