What is the typical recovery timeline after a genioplasty?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

After seven days of jaw genioplasty surgery, my face feels and looks so weird. I need a second opinion.

I have added all the before and after surgery scans and photos of my face. So my lips never used to close naturally, and my teeth were kinda outward to the front. So the doctor asked me to do jaw surgery with braces for teeth and genioplasty for my chin bone.

After doing research, I realized that it is going to be really helpful for me. So I decided to do these procedures on my face. But it is day seven, and as you can see from the photos. Everything looks so worse and cartoonish. My lower lip also feels so tight.

The doctor said it is all right, nothing to worry about. But I am worried that it is not gonna change. And I am gonna be stuck with this new look forever. So I am here for second opinions.

I expected my face was gonna be the same as before, but with improvements like lip closure and better bite. But everything seems changed. Any advice on how long I should wait for things to go back to normal, or if it is ever going back to normal?

I have seen people look fine one day surgery. But I feel so different and weirder.

Any advice or suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have seen the pre- and post-photographs and images (attachments removed for patient identity protection) you have enclosed. You may expect results in just one week; ideally, it will take two to three months to recover.

If you are more concerned about jaw esthetics right now, you need to consult a maxillofacial surgeon in the clinic who can give dermal filler injections to stabilize your face better.

You should go for a maxillofacial surgeon's second opinion in the clinic, so that whatever genioplasty material has been used for the amount you paid to your doctor, they can cross-check and see how best they can improve your appearance.

If the maxillofacial surgeon in the clinic is satisfied with your braces specialist, he will not suggest any further changes. In the clinic, reviewing is essential for seeing what material, what standard procedure, what implants, and what dimensions the surgery was done in, which cannot be assessed only through photography and images.

So I suggest you go for a second opinion review in your city to a maxillofacial surgeon in the clinic. Also, from my point of view, your face and the lips are tight for you because its outlook is better now and is healing well, but in terms of facial symmetry, you have to give it at least two to three months.

If you are entirely dissatisfied with the look or are facing oral discomfort, consult a surgeon, not just a general dentist in the clinic, with records of your genioplasty procedure with the previous doctor. If you wait and watch for one more month, you might notice a fuller face and better lip healing.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
