What are the diagnostic tests that detect glaucoma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a question about something that has been on my mind. Glaucoma runs in my family, and since I am turning 50 soon, I am starting to get a bit worried. Is there a specific eye exam I should get to check for it? I know glaucoma is pretty severe and can even lead to blindness if it is not caught early. Considering my age and family history, I want to stay on top of this. What kind of eye tests should I ask for? And how often should I be getting them? I have heard about tests like tonometry and visual field tests. Do I need to get them done?

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Tests like tonometry and visual field tests are commonly used to diagnose and manage glaucoma, a group of eye conditions that can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. Tonometry measures the pressure inside your eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP), a risk factor for glaucoma. Visual field tests assess your peripheral vision, which can be affected by glaucoma as the condition progresses. Suppose you are concerned about glaucoma or have risk factors such as high myopia and long-term use of contact lenses. In that case, your eye doctor may recommend these tests as part of a comprehensive eye examination. However, it is essential to consult with an eye care professional to determine the specific tests and screenings appropriate for your situation. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing glaucoma and preserving vision. It would help if you got screened for glaucoma.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
