What causes gum pain and swelling in the molar region?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My gums are swollen near the right molar. At the back of my molar, I feel pain even if I chew a biscuit. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.

As far as the swollen gums are concerned, it can be because of the collection of pus secondary to gum or tooth infection. To confirm the diagnosis, you need to get a radiograph or orthopantomogram done. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we can treat accordingly with either scaling and root planing for gum infection or root canal treatment for tooth infection. So consult an oral physician and get it evaluated. Meanwhile, I suggest you take a course of antibiotics like Amoxicillin and Metronidazole combination if not allergic. Also, do saline gargling. These are the possible diagnosis and treatment plans based on your description of your problem.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
