What are the treatments for hair loss and itchy scalp?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have severe hair loss and irritation in my scalp. Is this related to patterned hair loss? I want to know more about it. I am in my early thirties; therefore, my hair has started to gray. Is the itching in my hair due to graying? I would like to fix my hair loss and itching issues. I sometimes feel that my hair has dandruff, yet everyone in my house says it does not. Why do I get itching on my face and scalp? I also have skin issues such as dryness and acne. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I can provide you with some general information on hair loss, itching, and related skin issues. I suggest you consult a dermatologist or a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

  1. Pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia): This is a common type of hair loss affecting both men and women. In men, it often presents as a receding hairline and balding at the crown, while in women, it may cause thinning of hair all over the scalp. The onset of gray hair does not directly cause pattern hair loss, but the two can occur simultaneously due to aging.

  2. Itching in the scalp: Scalp itching can have various causes, including dryness, dandruff, allergic reactions, or infections. It is essential to determine the underlying cause for effective treatment. If you suspect dandruff, you could try using an anti-dandruff shampoo, but if the itching persists, I suggest consulting a professional for further evaluation.

  3. Grey hair and itching: Grey hair itself does not cause itching, but the process of hair turning gray might be associated with hormonal changes that could contribute to scalp issues. However, without examining your specific case, it is difficult to establish a direct link between the two.

  4. Skin issues: Dryness and acne can be related to various factors, such as genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. It is crucial to maintain a proper skincare routine and consult a dermatologist if these issues persist or worsen.

While it is necessary to address your concerns, it is also important to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. They can provide personalized advice and recommend products or therapies to effectively manage your hair loss, itching, and skin issues.

I hope this helps.

Please let me know if you need some help.

Thank you.
