What is the normal weight range for a 1-year-old baby?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My baby is 1 year old. His birth weight was 7.05 pounds. Now, after 1 year, his weight is 17.64 pounds. He is eating meals five to six times a day, but after eight months, weight gain is low. I am giving him breast milk at 7 in the morning, banana porridge at 8:30, rice porridge at 11, dal khichdi at 1 pm, ragi porridge at 4 pm, mixed lentils porridge at 7 pm, and egg or vegetable with rice at 9:30.
Please suggest.
Hi,
We welcome you to icliniq family.
I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation.
I can understand your concern about your symptoms.
The very first thing to note is that, age-wise, your son's weight is within the normal limits, although it is on the lower side of normal. Height-wise, he is normal.
As the information is limited, I would appreciate it if you could provide more details:
- Was the pregnancy normal with no issues or illnesses?
- How long was he in the hospital after birth?
- What are his milestones? For example, when did he start smiling, rolling over, sitting, and standing?
- Has he started walking with or without support?
- What words does he speak now?
- Is he passing urine and having bowel movements regularly?
- The number of feeds you are giving is good, but could you share the approximate quantity he consumes each time?
- Apart from breastfeeding, are you giving him any milk or milk products?
At one year of age, it is expected for a child to transition to family food, meaning he should be offered the same food as other family members. It can be less spicy or tailored to the child's taste. Please share all the details, and I will advise you accordingly. Alternatively, you can connect with me on chat, and I will discuss the issue in detail and advise you on food and monitoring.
Do not worry; he is still within the normal limits of weight, albeit on the lower side. Height-wise, he is normal. However, it is important to stay alert and take care to ensure he does not fall below the normal limits, which can be managed. Share all the details as mentioned.
Hope I have clarified your query. I will be happy to help you further.
Thank you.
