Can hormonal imbalance cause excessive menstrual bleeding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have very irregular periods and the longest cycle I have ever had lasted four days. Out of the blue, I started bleeding heavily with clots. Today marks three weeks of bleeding and clots. The doctor prescribed Medroxyprogesterone pills to help stop the bleeding. I am on day six of taking them, and my bleeding and clots have actually worsened. I have also been experiencing bloating, changes in bowel patterns, and pelvic pressure for months.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am very sorry to hear about your medical condition, and I am glad that you are paying attention to the changes in your body. But do not worry, I am here to take care of you.

Regarding your symptoms, I believe you may have developed menorrhagia, which is excessive menstrual bleeding possibly due to hormonal imbalance. May I ask if you took a pregnancy test before the bleeding started? This could also indicate a spontaneous abortion. Please undergo a hormone profile test and share the results with me. In the meantime, please take the following:

  1. Injection of conjugated Progestin 15 mg every eight hours until the bleeding stops.
  2. One tablet of vitamin K (4 mg) by mouth three times a day for one week.
  3. Two tablets of ferrous sulfate, an iron supplement (220 mg) by mouth three times a day for one month. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her, and take the medicines with their consent.

If your symptoms persist, please schedule a follow-up appointment via chat, phone, or video consultation.

Thank you.
