What causes a elevated value of hepatitis B titer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello,

I recently had a hepatitis B titer done. The results showed extremely high values. My doctor thought maybe it was a laboratory error. I repeated the titer and got the same result. My test showed 3666.0. What can cause this? I am currently taking Wellbutrin, Adderall, and Yaz. Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Hepatitis B surface antibody quantitation is used to determine hepatitis B immune status, i.e., to determine if the patient has developed immunity against the hepatitis B virus. Such immunity may develop following exposure to the hepatitis B virus or its vaccine. Patients at higher risk of exposure to the virus include:

  1. Infants born to infected mothers.
  2. Sex partners of infected persons.
  3. People with more than one sex partner in the last six months.
  4. People with a history of sexually transmitted infections.
  5. Men who have sex with men.
  6. Injection drug users.
  7. Household contacts of an infected person.
  8. Healthcare and safety workers who have contact with blood and body fluids.
  9. People who have lived or traveled in an area in which hepatitis B is common.
  10. People who live or work in a prison.

Please wait for four weeks and repeat the test, the levels will come down, if not then we will have to go for further screenings.

Thank you.
