What are the treatment options for hives?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife has been taking Fluconazole for about a week and a half for a yeast infection. She has been getting hives only at night, which becomes worse later. These hives do not get worse during the day.

Treated so far with Zyrtec-R (one pill every night). But once she skipped a pill for 36 hours, hives presented themselves again last night. Hives typically start to show and spread rapidly around 1 to 2 am.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Well, in medical terms, it is called urticaria. Urticaria is an allergic reaction, and it could be due to any one of the following.

1. Drug, and yes, in your case, it could be Fluconazole.

2. Infection itself can cause urticaria.

3. Food additives like artificial food flavors.

4. Protein like beef, milk, or egg.

5 Hot temperature.

6. Sometimes, cold.

7. Water.

8. And sometimes no cause.

Please try to identify the cause of hives and try to avoid them as much as possible. This avoidance is very necessary for the reaction to get settled. And, try to stop Fluconazole. Continue to take Zyrtec (Cetirizine 10 mg) for three weeks. It can take some six weeks to stop it.

See if you can get tablet Ebastine ( H₁ antihistamine) 10 mg. Take it once in the morning for three weeks. Consult your doctor and take the medicines accordingly. Eat a soft diet and take plenty of fluids.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
