How to diagnose and manage HMPV?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 47-year-old nurse working in a pediatric hospital, and for the past week, I have been feeling progressively worse. It started with mild fatigue and congestion, but now I have a persistent dry cough and shortness of breath. I have been exposed to several patients with respiratory illnesses recently, and I am concerned that I might have picked up something like HMPV, which I have read is common in healthcare settings. Would you recommend a respiratory virus panel to confirm this? Also, how does HMPV compare to RSV or flu regarding severity and complications, especially since I am already feeling breathless? Should I be worried about developing something serious like pneumonia, and how long would I likely be contagious if this is HMPV?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Given your symptoms and recent exposure to respiratory illnesses, a respiratory virus panel is a good idea to confirm if you have HMPV (human metapneumovirus) or another virus. HMPV can cause symptoms similar to RSV or the flu but tends to be less severe overall. However, it can lead to pneumonia, especially in those with underlying conditions or weakened immunity. Since you are already experiencing shortness of breath, it is important to monitor for any worsening symptoms, and if your condition deteriorates, seek medical attention promptly. If it is HMPV, you are typically contagious for about three to eight days after symptoms start, but it could be longer sometimes. Rest, hydration, and supportive care are essential, but seek immediate care if you develop worsening breathing issues.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
