Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My 70-year-old dad has a history of mitral valve disease and now has a fever, cough, and congestion. His doctor suspects HMPV, but he is feeling more short of breath than usual, and his heart rate seems irregular. Could this infection be worsening his valve condition or leading to complications like endocarditis? Should we take him to the hospital?
Please help me.
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Since your 70-year-old dad has mitral valve disease and is experiencing fever, cough, congestion, shortness of breath, and irregular heart rate, there are serious concerns that need urgent evaluation.
Possible complications that he may have are the following.
Heart failure worsening – Infections like HMPV (human metapneumovirus) can put extra strain on the heart, making mitral valve disease worse and leading to fluid buildup in the lungs.
Bacterial endocarditis – Fever and irregular heart rate could suggest an infection of the heart valves, which is a medical emergency.
Pneumonia – Viral infections can lead to secondary bacterial pneumonia, worsening breathing problems.
Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) – Infections and inflammation can trigger heart rhythm problems, which can be dangerous in heart patients.
Take him to the hospital if he has the following.
Worsening shortness of breath.
Persistent fever.
Irregular or fast heart rate.
Confusion, dizziness, or weakness.
Swelling in legs or severe fatigue
Since he has a heart condition, waiting too long could be risky.
Feel free to follow up with any further questions or concerns.
Thank you.
