How to overcome hormonal imbalance in a 22-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old female. I have been experiencing a wide range of symptoms that lead me to suspect the presence of a hormonal imbalance. These symptoms include irregular menstrual cycles, unexplained weight fluctuations, persistent fatigue, mood swings, and changes in skin conditions. I am interested in understanding the potential causes and adverse effects of these symptoms. Kindly suggest some strategies to overcome this hormonal imbalance in my body.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

The menstrual cycle is controlled by a set of hormones that are supposed to be within the normal range. However, there are cases where people develop insulin resistance, resulting in irregular periods, unexplained weight fluctuation, and mood swings, among others. The most common cause of this combination of features is PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). However, you will need to do some investigations to confirm the diagnosis. Also, modifying your diet to include more fruits than carbohydrates and performing aerobic exercise helps to increase your body's response and, therefore, ameliorate these symptoms. Some medications can be added. However, you would need to do some tests like a transvaginal ultrasound scan, thyroid function test, estrogen, testosterone, and fasting insulin.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
