Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My uncle was recently diagnosed with Huntington's disease, which has been devastating for our family. I do not know much about this condition. Can you explain what Huntington's disease is, what causes it, and what the typical symptoms and progression are like?
I am trying to understand more about what my uncle is going through and what we can expect in the years ahead as his family and caregivers. Any insights you can provide would be really helpful.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
I am so sorry to hear about your uncle's diagnosis. This disease is not only a hard challenge for patients but also for their families and caregivers.
The cause of the disease is genetic mutations in the gene that codes the Huntingtin protein. As a result, the abnormal protein will be produced and accumulated causing injury and death of the neuronal cells.
The typical manifestations are:
Abnormal movements: Mainly twisting or jerky movements in the limb.
Cognitive problems: Difficulty in judgment, orientation, planning, focusing, etc.
Psychiatric problems such as apathy, depression, irritability, and sleep problems.
Unfortunately, it is a progressive disease and in its late stage, patients will need full-time care due to accumulating disabilities.
I am so sorry to say that currently there is no cure, but some medications can decrease the abnormal movements and improve mood.
As a caregiver, it Is important to stay informed and connected with healthcare providers who specialize in Huntington’s disease (a genetic condition that affects the brain cells). Support groups and counseling can also be beneficial for both your uncle and your family as you navigate this journey together.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
