Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is Huntington's disease an inherited disease? I have heard my maternal grandfather had it. Is it possible to have the same disease in me without my knowledge, or can I transmit it to my child? Kindly explain.

Answered by Dr. Muntaqa Butt

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Regarding your question about the inheritance of the disease, Huntington's disease is familial. This disease is an autosomal dominant disorder, and the pattern of such diseases is that there is a 50 % chance that the next generation will have this disease. There is a chance that you might have the disease, or you may not have the disease. If you have the disease, then there are 50 % chances that your next generation will have the disease. You can confirm it through genetic testing for Huntington's disease.

Thank you.
