Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have recently been diagnosed with hypercholesterolemia, and I am concerned about managing my cholesterol levels through diet. Could you provide detailed guidance on which foods I should include and avoid to help lower my cholesterol? I have read that certain dietary changes can have a significant impact, but I am unsure where to start. Are there specific types of fats or other nutrients I should focus on or eliminate? Please advise.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
Hypercholesterolemia (elevated levels of cholesterol in the blood) requires that the following foods be omitted or reduced from the diet:
1. Red meat (like beef, mutton, and pork), fried or deep-fried food of both animal and plant origin.
2. Avoid oils like coconut oil and palm oil, although this is controversial. Olive oil, sesame oil, and groundnut oil are healthier alternatives.
3. Avoid bakery food and sweet savories.
4. Whole milk (with cream) and clarified butter are also best avoided. Plant and animal food is best eaten steamed or grilled, rather than deep fried if one has high cholesterol.
5. Avoid reheating and reusing cooking oil, as rancidity (incomplete hydrolysis of fats) can be harmful in terms of cholesterol levels.
I hope that you get your answer.
Please let me know if you need any help.
Thank you.
