Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 18 years old and developed hypothalamic obesity after surgery for a craniopharyngioma. I have gained over 44 pounds despite eating carefully and trying to exercise.
Is this kind of weight gain permanent?
Can medications like Setmelanotide or GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) agonists like Semaglutide help in hypothalamic obesity, or are they only for typical obesity?
Is there any surgical or neurobehavioral approach that has been shown to work?
Also, can this condition affect puberty, mood, or other hormone levels over time?
Please suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
Hypothalamic obesity after treated craniopharyngioma is often considered long-lasting and difficult to reverse, even with interventions. While some patients may experience a degree of weight loss or stabilization with medical interventions, a full return to normal weight is typically not achieved. Both Setmelanotide and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide -1) agonists like Semaglutide show promise as effective treatments for hypothalamic obesity, offering new avenues for managing this condition. While further research is ongoing, these medications have demonstrated the ability to significantly reduce weight and improve quality of life in patients with hypothalamic obesity. Both surgical and behavioral approaches can be used to manage hypothalamic obesity, though the specifics vary depending on the individual and the cause of the obesity.
Hypothalamic obesity can significantly impact both mood and hormones. Damage to the hypothalamus, which is responsible for regulating many bodily functions, can lead to changes in appetite, energy expenditure, and hormone levels, all of which can affect mood and overall well-being.
I hope this answers your query.
Let me know if I need to assist you further.
Thank you.
