What could cause bleeding after taking oral contraceptive pill in a 28-year-old female?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello,

I am a 28-year-old female. My boyfriend ejected sperm in my vagina when I was asleep and we did not have sex after that. When I woke up I saw sperm all over my vagina, and I am not sure if the sperm went inside or not. As I was not sure I took oral contraceptives 43 hours after the incident. I felt breast pain and tenderness for 14 days, also I had pain in my lower abdomen and I was very stressed. After the 14th day, I was bleeding red and I could also see blood clots in the bleeding. I thought I had periods but the bleeding started a week earlier than my regular period date. The bleeding lasted only for one and a half days, so I am very confused about the nature of the bleeding. It has been 17 days since I took the oral contraceptives and now I do not feel any pain. When bleeding happened I was not well and had low blood pressure. I took Paracetamol and a nasal spray decongestant then.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I hope you are feeling better now. Based on the details you have provided, it seems that you experienced some side effects from the emergency contraceptive pill, which is normal. The bleeding you had might have been caused by the contraceptive pill as well. However, to make sure your symptoms are not indicative of a more serious condition get an ultrasound done of the whole abdomen. Additionally, if you are sexually active and not ready to conceive, please consider using a reliable form of contraception to prevent unintended pregnancies.

I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
